Abstract
Purpose: Characteristics of female inguinal hernia patients are different from male inguinal hernia. To make a good decision for inguinal hernia, knowing the characteristics would be very important.

Methods: Study period was between January 2003 and April 2012. One surgeon did every repair. Data was collected through electric medical record system of the hospital, retrospectively.

Results: Data of 1,100 patients was collected during the study period. Male patients were 985 and female patients were 115. Average age of male was 55.9 years and average age of female was 50.1 years. Female patients were younger than male patients. Bilaterality of inguinal hernia was 11% in male and 3.5% in female. Direct hernia was 15.6% in male and 6.1% in female. In Rutkow type, female patients with type 1, 2, and 3 were 3.5%, 27.8% and 41.7%, respectively. Type 4 and 5 in female patients were 2.6% each. Type 7 is femoral hernia; female was 16.5% and male was 0.3%. Most frequent content of sac was omentum in male patients and fat in female patients. Most frequently combined disease of male patients was hypertension (10.1%), and heart problem (3.5%) in female patients. Complication rates were similar in female patients and male patients. Most frequent complication was hematoma in male (5.6%) and female (5.2%) patients.

Conclusion: Characteristics of female hernia was earlier onset of hernia, less bilateral hernias, less direct hernias, less hernia size, and more femoral hernias. Female inguinal hernia had different characteristics from male inguinal hernia.
